THE ULTIMATE
Paper Towns and The Fault in our Stars were written by award winning #1 international bestselling author John Green. These books share many similarities and differences. For example there are two main characters, the themes are very alike, both take place in suburban areas, and the characterization is similar. One girl and one boy are the main characters for both books. In the end the boys and girls fall in love. There are also many differences. Some of those differences are Paper Towns is a road trip movie, it is not as sad, and it is more of a male movie. In The Fault in our Stars both characters are dying from illnesses, it is more romantic, and is more realistic. Many more tears have been shed watching The Fault in our Stars than Paper Towns (especially mine). If you liked Paper Towns romantic love stories, adventurous conflict, and unforgettable characters, then the The Fault in our Stars is a book for you.
The two books each have a strong female lead. In Paper Towns it’s Margo Roth Spiegelman and in The Fault in our Stars it is Hazel Grace Lancaster. Unlike Hazel, Margo is very popular, everyone wants to be her, and her parents don’t care as much. As for Hazel she just wants to be a normal teenager but is diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer, she is dying but is managing to stay alive. Both characters share a love for adventures and are very intelligent. Hazel is not outgoing but Margo is, and that causes her to become the center of conflict. Margo is very self-centered, manipulates people into thinking she is better than she really is, and acts like she doesn’t like anyone. When she seeks Quentin's help she treats him like a dog but he isn’t adventurous and is in love with Margo so he just goes along with it and doesn’t care. When she disappears Quentin tries to find her but she does not want to be found. He has to convince her to come back to Florida even though she feels like she doesn’t belong. “She loved mysteries so much she became one” (Green 8). Hazel is very shy and has very few friends. Kaitlyn is really her only friend and she tries to be there for Hazel but it is hard. Also, Hazel wants so badly to be like everyone but is not able to be and so her parents and doctor agreed that she should attend support group. “... she took me to see my Regular Doctor Jim, who agreed that I was veritably swimming in a paralyzing and totally clinical depression and that therefore my meds should be adjusted and also I should attend a weekly Support Group” (Green 3-4). One day at Support Group she meets Augustus Waters and her whole life changes. Hazel shares her love of books with Augustus and the two, along with Mrs. Lancaster take a trip to Amsterdam to visit the author of Hazel’s favorite book An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten but come to find out he is just an alcoholic that is abrasive. While TFIOS mostly takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana and Paper Towns mostly in Orlando, Florida both stories end up all over the world. TFIOS takes place in the Indianapolis of the sick, not the touristy part. Hazel and Augustus, also known as Gus, spend their time at each other’s homes, support group or hospitals. In the middle towards the end part of the book Gus, Hazel, and, Mrs. Lancaster travel to Amsterdam and their view of Peter changes drastically. Quentin, aka Q, travels many places in search of Margo in Paper Towns. Margo and Q both live in a suburb of Orlando called Jefferson Park. The search for Margo begins in Florida, goes to North Carolina, and finishes in Agloe, New York where Margo is. Romantic love stories. Adventurous conflicts. Unforgettable characters. All three of these make up the plots of both stories. If you enjoyed reading Paper Towns then you will love The Fault in our Stars. Both novels written by John Green share many key ideas but also have their own differences. John Green is an amazing and creative author and I highly recommend his books, especially Paper Towns and The Fault in our Stars.
